How long are we into the COVID-19 thing? A month-ish? I’m exhausted but hanging in there. Lots of overtime. Lots and lots and LOTS of overtime.
There’s a meme about spending a month away from society in exchange for a million bucks. Most people say they could do it, but the preppers are restless and protesting. That’s the latest meme, naturally: whining about whining.
Gotta love social media. It ignores a whole lot of obvious details like, for example, how I’m still waiting for my million bucks.
But what I’m not waiting for? A spice organizer for the world’s tiniest kitchen.
The above was custom built by my own personal carpenter, the one I’m married to. It’s my early Mother’s Day gift and I am tickled pink to have it. The drawers are deep – our pantry is deeper than you can tell here – and can be pulled all the way out if I want to go there.
While my “isolation” has been stuck in work mode, my spousal unit has taken advantage of the long spring and travel restriction to do several woodworking projects. He hasn’t been able to do yard sales, but he’s kept busy.
This was an old (best guess from the hinges, nails, and other details at least 100 years old) table he rehabbed and sold. I picked it up last year for $10 because I loved its overall lines. It was in sad shape when I bought it. The top was all but tied in a bow. It’s still not going to pass for 21st-century build, but it’s now stable and still has character.

It was sold about fifteen seconds after he listed it, for the record. I was halfway hoping we’d end up keeping it, though it doesn’t fit our otherwise mostly MCM vibe.
The husband factory also built an army of cutting boards and other goodies for our Etsy store. (Not sure they’re listed yet. He’s still figuring out a price.) And he saved the most amazing ones for me – though it’s too dark for me to take a picture of my set, which is built with considerably more walnut and purple-heart wood than these:

We have achieved peak toilet paper (two cases now) and paper towels (one case for two people.) We’re doing okay overall and can, if necessary, stay put for a long time except to get groceries.
My younger daughter has continued to battle health issues BUT… there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. She’s tentatively scheduled for surgery next week. Yes, despite the COVID-19 crap, if that tells you anything. This has been something where doctors put her off so long it’s become a genuine emergency. And it’s still waiting for the insurance company to approve it, because let’s face it – their business isn’t saving lives, it’s saving money. Their money.
The extra special challenge? The daughter starts a new job – where I work – barely a week later. I just hope we offer a virtual class for her training. (Our current training class is a virtual one.) If we do that, she can literally lie down through training class and nobody will care. Otherwise, she might have to postpone starting work, which would not be a pretty situation at all. Everyone’s finances – my overtime aside – would be pushed to the limits.

Look at you, Little Miss Survivalist! I’m very impressed. “Gotta have organized spices!” Yup, I agree. Priorities are important in a time of plague, babe 🙂
LOVE LOVE LOVE the cutting boards! Spousal Unit is an impressive artisan indeed. Wish I had that kind of skill. Oh – and good luck with the daughter. Seriously.
The cutting boards are amazing. So is the spice rack. I’m going to get a picture of my own cutting boards too, but gotta go to work first…
I’m glad you have the spousal unit to make the things you need, especially now when he is home bound. Good luck to your daughter witht her surgery and the new job. I’m sure she will do well. Continued good luck to you with your overtime hours. Maybe, some day, things will get a bit less hectic.
I hope so. I’d love to retire but it has to wait a bit longer.
