Down the (Dirt) Road

Posted on February 7, 2024 by leilani

I got up and logged in to work yesterday morning at my usual time. I was working maybe two minutes when our Internet crashed and burned. Based on the same error message we were getting a couple of weeks ago, I already knew it wasn’t coming back up without a cable repair person coming to the house.

Again.

The earliest appointment was 3pm-5pm. My work shift ends at 4:30pm, so the day was a wash. Thankfully I had plenty of PTO to cover it. I just prefer to take my time off on my schedule, thankyouverymuch.

Adding insult to injury, the repair guy said the problem was almost certainly something the previous tech missed when he was out a couple of weeks ago. Here’s hoping it’s fixed right this time.

With a forced day off, I decided to spend my time doing something non-Internet: sewing.

Oh. My. God.

I’d forgotten how much I love sewing when a sewing machine works well.

The only frustration was having to work in 30-minute intervals. My stamina is shot to hell. But I got my initial project done and got a feel for what the machine can do, which is everything I wanted. It probably wouldn’t hold up well to upholstery work (within the realm of possibility in my world) but everything else? Slam dunk. Now I’ve got projects lined up and waiting for me to get my ass on the sewing machine and make stuff.

The selfie at left was taken this weekend, whilst we were out taking photos with our “real” cameras. This one was snapped with my phone. My hair was messy thanks to having the windows down in eary February, one of the perks of living where summers are measured in oven settings and winters are heavenly.

I obviously didn’t do much in the way of editing: you can see the messy hair and every wrinkle. Thankfully this is a small blog with precious few followers, and none of my followers are teeny-boppers likely to be offended by all the above

Yes, that is my real hair color, not Miss Clairol or the salon equivalent. Yes, my hair is long nowadays and I tend to wear braids (though most days I only wear one braid at the back of my head). No, I’m not wearing makeup because, unfortunately, allergies. And yeah, I have almost invisible eyebrows, the one-two punch of over-plucking in the 70s and just being an old fart. I turned 66 in November and don’t really care who knows it.

We didn’t have ideal light for photography this weekend. Magnificent temperatures, with daytime highs ranging around the high 50s to low 60s. The tradeoff was our typical hard desert light.

Today, naturally, the skies were optimal for photography: overcast with the promise of rain. After missing yesterday, though, I couldn’t exactly beg off work to do a photo jaunt.

Coming up next week, however, is another four-day weekend (prescheduled vacation days). If all goes to plan, we’ll do a run down to the Chiricahuas and vicinity, since we didn’t get to do that jog last fall. The forecast calls for rain all this week, so we may not have ideal skies for the trip. Fingers crossed for another kind of tradeoff: with this much rain, we might be lucky enough to see some early wildflowers.

Thank you! We were definitely enjoying ourselves. This kind of weather is too beautiful to spend it indoors!

I KNEW I WAS UGLIER THAN YOU! You finally outted yourself, dummy.

Oh, and man are those moving geometric shapes distracting while you’re trying to read a post. Better than that awful weird lagging cursor thingy you had for a while, though.

    😉

You forget, I’ve seen your picture too. The “uglier” award still cringes because it sits on my shelf.
I agree about the moving stuff on the background, but I haven’t found a current theme that doesn’t have something annoying about it.

Actually, fixed the moving crapola. Just went to an uber-clean theme this time.
