This has been a cleaning-binge weekend for us. We went yesterday to look at a couple of mobiles. One was too tiny for words: fine for one person, maybe two if one is a child. The second one was pretty decent – tiny bedrooms but the living room would be much larger than where we now live AND there were three bedrooms. Nothing spectacular, just a decent place to live.
We’re going today (hopefully) to look at another, significantly larger place that would actually be cheaper than both we saw yesterday. We’re just waiting for the owners to get back with us on when we can see it. Bonus points because with this one we’d be paying for less than 5 years and it would be paid off! It’s 3BR, about 1500sf and even has a fireplace. It’s out in the boonies but if we got the right quote it would drop our monthly bills by about $350 a month compared to our rent. Calculate in the price difference for the phone bill and we’ll be sitting pretty.
Meanwhile yesterday we tackled some cleanups, clearing out a few bazillion books (what we now have actually fits in the bookcases, yay!) and emptying a couple of boxes of odds and ends. Most of the odds are now odd man out. This was reasonably decent stuff so it went mostly on Freecycle, though a couple of things are likely going to be sold rather than given away. We have a couple of TV converter boxes that are virtually brand new – we’ll keep one as a backup against the possibility of dropping cable at some point, the other is gonna go bye-bye.
Our office looks pretty decent after all the work. The bookcase ended up more gray than green. We were looking for a soft green, but to be perfectly honest I think I like this better anyway. It looks vastly cleaner without all the dings and dents and chipped old paint. When G started sanding it down, we found at least three previous layers of paint on it, visible in various spots through the chipping. It’s now a uniform color and no missing spots. G also found me a new glass-top desk a couple of days ago. I didn’t know if I would like it but it is actually pretty cool (if you don’t count the fingerprints.) It had been tossed out by someone moving out, and is like brand new. Free is always a good price!
Today’s project is cleaning out our bedroom closet, which is the final disaster area we need to tackle. It ain’t pretty at all. It’s time, though. Not only do we need to streamline things in anticipation of moving, but the temperatures have finally risen enough we need to put the winter clothes away and pull down our summer stuff.
I woke without the alarm clock at o’dark thirty, when I normally get up to go to work. Since I was wide awake anyway I figured I’d get up. Once up and awake, the cleaning bug bit me. G does the cleaning and does a very good job of it – but in this case I tackled some things that typically get pushed aside – cleaning off the fridge (G’s cleaning the inside later today) and cleaning under and behind the microwave, things like that.
Well, we’ve gotta get going. Heard back from the folks on the place and have an appointment a little while from now. Cross your fingers!
