G-man (my boss’s nickname for G) is hanging in there.
His fancy extra-long USB cable was delivered late today. I smiled through gritted teeth and bought it, in support of his new focus on indoor photography. OEM Nikon would’ve cost less – probably a lot less. He’s convinced it will mean a lowered trip hazard. I would have assumed the opposite, since the cable is nearly 1.5 times the length of the room where his studio is setup. It’s long enough he can tie it up somewhere, I guess.
I don’t begrudge him something to make any part of his life easier. I just hope it does make things better, instead of creating a new set of problems.
Our new reality is my picking up the slack for things G can’t reliably do any more and some he only did once in a great while even before the stroke. I was always the cook, but G took care of dishes, laundry, and 90% of the cleaning. Since his health turned, I handle the bigger portion of the chores, despite still working full time, despite physical challenges.
Some fixes were simple, like trading a professional-weight wet mop (too heavy and unwieldy for me to manage) for a Swiffer. Others are still not resolved.
When we bought this house, it had a Li’l-Abner-meets-Mad-Max version of a dishwasher.
We’re not positive if it worked. The racks were missing, which may have been its best quality. One certainty: we weren’t going to risk turning it on, even if was possible to do so. We hauled it to the dump however many years ago and never replaced it. The spot where it sat is covered by a dingy, ugly, ill-fitting curtain.
It’s time to change that. We can afford the upgrade, thank goodness. We’ve talked about it in passing over the years. Only reason we haven’t replaced it before is G did the dishes, and he said we didn’t need to spend the money. That, plus the space is crammed with cleaning supplies, most of which date back seven years. Neither argument has aged well.
I’m going to bring it up again tomorrow. G may be all for it. Or not. If he’s opposed, I’ll tell him to think about it, then I’ll back off and let him do exactly that. Anything he perceives as a major decision, he has to mull it over for a day or two before researching the best deals.
Which he will absolutely do.
My husband has a definite pattern, and I’ve learned to go with it.
