Still Rolling Along

Posted on July 9, 2024 by leilani

Life has been… yeah. Much improved from a few weeks ago, though, thank goodness.

The grandson is doing vastly better. He’s back to his smart-aleck-early-teen self. While his mama is still dealing with health issues, we’ve now established with 100% certainty that the health issues are greatly diminished when she’s not in Arizona. She flew back to the Midwest for a week, trying to sort out a housing solution. The housing didn’t get solved — yet — but she basked in the temporary reprieve from pain.

G is doing better overall. We got his butt in to see a doctor and he’s on prescription meds again. He celebrated his 70th birthday a couple of days ago and has never worn glasses in his life, so the fact he needs glasses now isn’t exactly shocking. We’ve got an appointment Friday for an eye exam. I know how tough it is when you can’t see worth crap. Glasses are expensive, and worth every penny.

I used to buy from — and recommend — a website called eshakti-dot-com for custom-made clothing. After filing the third payment dispute because they didn’t actually send the stuff I paid for, that stopped.

Que será, será.

raglan_topLucky for me, drafting your own custom sewing patterns ain’t rocket science. Start by wrapping your body with plastic wrap, at least over your shoulders and to the bottom of your hips. (Let’s face it – that crap isn’t good for anything else, anyway.) Then wrap either duct tape or painter’s tape two layers deep over the plastic wrap. Cut a straight line up the front middle, and peel it back. You just peeled off your exact body shape and size. Cut the shape into logical pieces, add ease and seam allowances, and voilà! You just made a custom pattern!

A few days ago, I also found a free pattern for the raglan-sleeve top shown at left, I decided to alter it — not only for size, but to add a curved yoke and make it tunic length. (It also isn’t going to be white because HAHAH no.)

My apologies for the crappy lines in the animation. I’m good at Photoshop, but hand-drawn lines are apparently beyond me. And no, I didn’t scribble on tunic length because why?

This page links to a whole bunch of free sewing patterns, if anybody besides me sews. (Ignore that it says plus-size. Nearly all of the linked patterns are multi-size, including normal-person sizes.)

The truck at the top of this page is from a welding shop down the road from us. I didn’t get a photo, but directly across the street is a sign that says, “Watch for Trucks.” I’m not sure if someone from the road crew had a sense of humor — or the welding shop did. Kudos to whoever it was.

I’ve got vacation time approved starting the first full week of October. The plan is to drive back to the Midwest again, with a detour up through Denver to see our youngest son and his family. I’m sure we’ll spend time with the kids, but we’re also going to be looking with an eye toward a move. It can’t come too soon.

I hope the housing situations can be resolved with moves for you and your daughter. It sounds like you are making good plans for the future. I hope G’s health continues to improve. Even with cataract surgery or eyeglasses, eyesight isn’t always what it was when we were younger. Good luck.

I know what you mean. G’s frustrated because he’s always had perfect eyesight, so this is a huge change for him.

The body needs food, water, and air; so does the soul need love, laughter, and imagination.
