We’re doing the family holiday thing next weekend, which is good and bad. I haven’t seen some of the grandbabies in months, so glad I’m getting to see them again. I’m having a tooth pulled the day before – so yay for not being able to eat anything.
The elder daughter is hosting this year’s family-fest at her house. It’s further out in the boonies than us, and a long haul from our house to hers, albeit not as far as the Midwest.
My voice is finally, grudgingly on a return trip. I’m not 100% but neither am I still on the “gutted whisper followed by a broken squeak” brigade. I’ll take it and be glad for it. Both G and I still have coughs, but those are also tapering off.
The sparkle-filled basket at the top of the page is a small part of my White Elephant gift. Because if you can’t bring gaudy peacock-themed Christmas decorations, what good are you? I need to line the basket with holiday towels – hopefully in blue, but I’ll also take green and/or gold. The more clash, the merrier! I’ll probably add some chocolates or something comparable. I might have gone for eye-searing colors and a glitterplosion, but I’m not a monster.
If you watch my weekly yard-sale album updates on FB, you’ve probably already seen this sad li’l table:

If you didn’t see it all blown up and embiggened, there it is. It’s rough – just this side of firewood rough. However, I love, love, LOVE the lines of it.
Also, G and I gorge on woodworker vids on YouTube. Most people watch the Walking Dead or Desperate Housewives of Tombstone or something. We watch artisans do stuff that’ll knock your socks off. I thought G might be irked that I bought this. He’s given me the stink-eye for even looking at some pieces in better condition than this little thing. (It is indeed LITTLE – I think the top is maybe 12-13 inches in each direction.) Lucky for me, he’s been watching the vids long enough to want to try some of the techniques.
There will be wood filler. The veneer on top is a lost cause. Either we’ll have to replace it or chisel it off and paint the wood underneath it, most likely the second option. That wood, by the way, is another reason G didn’t get upset with me. It’s an older piece, so it has a wood and plywood structure, vs. particle board. That waterfall front is likely bent plywood. The piece is circa 1930.
I only paid $3 for it – talked down from 5 because 1) condition and 2) G has bought a shit-ton of stuff from these same people over the years.
Not loving the existing handle on table-to-be-painted, so I ordered a pair of these from eBay tonight:

I was looking for something leaning art-deco, which this design does. At 1.25 inches across and low profile, these should be perfect for a diminutive piece of furniture. They cost less than anything pizzazzy at Home Depot, and forget finding anything unique on Amazon. These were on eBay, supposedly from a US seller. Hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be another Chinese scammer posing as an American.

Good luck on the table.. you can always tell the Chinese products that take a month or more to ship. I usually need things NOW so that doesn’t work for me.
This seller is from North Carolina. 8 complaints out of 700 sales in the past year, so I’m fairly comfortable buying from them. The knobs are cheap Chinese knockoffs, but it’s not the first time I’ve bought Chinese knockoffs, either, lol.
I love that little table too. I can’t wait to see the restoration with the new knobs.
I’m glad you have family to spend the holidays with. I was thinking this year how sad it is because my only relatives are not here except for my sister who lives with me. And my husband’s extended family is practically non existent too It’s strange since our house used to be the gathering place and now no one is around or wants to have a family time.
Aww I’m sorry you spend holidays with so little family. I understand it can be hard, especially with the pandemic, for everyone to get together. Still unfortunate *hugs*
