Writing is crazy business. I get on binges where I tear through, then I run out of steam (and ideas) and let it go for a while. This time the steam has me juggling two stories simultaneously.
I hope the two paperbacks are ready to fly. Waiting for the printer proofs now and going to do one more rip-through to check for typos and nonsense phrasing. Considering how often I write under the influence of sleep deprivation, I guess I can’t fuss too much. I’m working on two more right now – both novels. One’s a standalone; one’s a sequel to The Color of Fate, called The Counsel of the Crown.
I’d created a mockup of the cover for the latter, but didn’t love it. It just seemed kind of 80’s-ish. Not what I was aiming for. So I revised. No, I threw it out and started over again, partly because of a lightbulb moment on the plot. I’d more or less written myself into a corner and had to figure out how to get out, preferably without messing up the paint job along the way. Oh hush, I can mix metaphors all I want.
So – here’s my tentative cover, subject to many zillion revisions along the way. I suppose I need to find some way to work in a crown, but whatevah.

It’s not a perfect cover but imho it’s an improvement. And it gives me a little more oomph to go forward with the story. Because if I put this stuff out in actual print… You know, paperbacks and all that jazz. If I do that, and say stuff’s going to be out whenever, it should probably be out whenever. Right?
I didn’t get the transfer I applied for, even though both managers who interviewed me told me I nailed the interview. I’m sure it has nothing to do with being female, and old fart, and disabled. I’m pushing forward with other alternatives, but one of my colleagues took me aside today and said the part of the business that’s shutting down? It may end up moving to a third party who’ll be hiring work-from-home. I could handle that, particularly if they drop-kick some of the garbage issues to the curb when it moves over. Gimme the same $$ and no commute and I’m all over it.
In the meantime, I’m taking care of business. So it’s all good.
Ooo, I like the look of the cover! Although I think it might be a bit more dramatic if the archer’s right arm was drawn in the classic post-release position of up-and-back (https://treshabarger.com/2014/10/12/celtic-festival-2/arrow-in-flight-s/ ).
Sucks that you didn’t get the transfer, but I hope you get that better possible option now: work in your undies! Woo hoo!!
I like the concept you showed for the archer – finding a licensed image within my price tag might be a wee bit more tricky. Plus I need some very specific details I can’t tell you without telling you key plot points in the book.
I can’t realistically use this cover anyway, though. It’s inconsistent with the cover I used for the first book. If I’m turning this neverending nightmare… er, story…. into a series, even a two-book series, the cover design needs some connection. I bought a cheapo crappy plastic multi-headed dragon that might get crown-ized and photoshopped and whatnot. We’ll see how I can make it work.
I literally am using the cover for a writing guideline for the moment, anyway. It’s crazy the things I do to keep myself writing.
And yes, working in my undies wouldn’t break my heart. Neither would foregoing 3-1/2 hours a day of commute time.
Nice book cover. I hope the book comes into being ease.
Maybe the whole work at home thing will come to be and then who needs a stinky transfer (my fingers are crossed)
Thanks Joyce. This one overall, despite taking its sweet time, is still faster than the first one, which I started when my baby was, well, a baby. She’s in her thirties now, lol.
Keeping my fingers crossed that ONE of the home-based escapades makes me filthy rich 😉
I like the cover but I certainly understand that you may want to change it. I just submitted my latest book cover to Createspace but I’m not positive it is what I really want. Hope the possible work at home job works out for you.
I like this cover, but it’s out of sync with the cover for Book One. I’m shooting for consistency.
