I know Poolie has less than stellar things to say about the extreme coupon element, and I agree that the television show devolves into what would be a joke if it didn’t come at the expense of the families. The fact is that for some people, extreme couponing may be the difference between surviving or not surviving. What’s more, if you can teach extreme couponing to someone who’s been existing on food stamps, it’s less of your tax dollars to feed their family and pay their bills.
As I’ve struggled to find a viable business model that lets me work from home, I’ve torn through a bunch of ideas. Some of them were always going to be iffy – take the plan to design ebook covers. Nice concept but the competition is ridiculous and it doesn’t allow for the times when my hands are too cramped to do anything creative. I still want to do the online store, and I’m still doing the illustrations for the children’s book (slowly) but they aren’t going to bring in money NOW. The coupon and discounts thing really does make a difference.
What’s more, if we can get the app together, it can allow me to retire and help other families struggling just to survive. I can see this being a Godsend for someone trying to subsist on minimum wage; what if you could do grocery shopping, get your groceries for free, and make enough extra money to cover what your wages don’t?
On top of everything else, for any extras, we’ll be recommending donation to food banks and shelters. In my book, it’s a win-win situation.
Before heading down this road, I really did a lot of soul searching. I first approached things as though I wanted to get and stay rich. It was a nice theory, and one that would’ve covered my own ass, and left me with nothing to enrich my soul. I knew I’d never be happy with that alone, so I had a long talk with the heavens and we agreed it would be fine and dandy for me to make a living wage while helping others. There has been a progression of increasingly viable options come forward ever since, culminating with this one.
I’m not 100% sure how to turn it into an app at this point, though my partner in crime seems to think it can be done. Hey, if she can describe how to make it an app, I’ll build the app. And if we can help people along the way, even better.
The big thing is timing. The business partner has all of the details. She also has several significant and disruptive issues in her life, including an abusive spouse, that have slowed the process waaaaay down. A seizure last weekend send her headlong down a flight of steps and that’s not the only serious health issue in her world. Yes, I know what you allow will persist. I also know that it’s easy to say that when you don’t deal with the circumstances personally, and don’t know what a clusterfuck it is to disentangle yourself from a bad relationship. That goes double when small children are involved and you don’t know if you’ll live to see them grow up.
If we can make this happen and make it enough of a success, I’m hoping she can get a couple of key medical procedures performed that would make all the difference for her. I’m appalled that some of them haven’t already happened. But this is the OSA, after all – the Oligarchy States of America, the land of the rich get richer and the poor get screwed.
Except I’m doing my best to turn at least a couple of small tables on that. Little ones, in the corner, behind the curtain. Legally. You know.
